Temple resident and Belton High School graduate William Paysse made double bogeys on his fourth and fifth holes Monday at Bandon Trails and shot an 8-over-par 79 in the first round of stroke play at the 120th U.S. Amateur Championship in Bandon, Oregon.
The 20-year-old Paysse, a redshirt freshman on Texas A&M's golf team, is tied for 199th place out of 264 golfers at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. For the second round of stroke play, he'll tee off on the Bandon Dunes course at 7:44 a.m. PDT Tuesday. With only the top 64 players advancing to match play Wednesday, Paysse will need a low score to get back into contention in his first U.S. Amateur appearance and second USGA event overall.
After making consecutive double bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5, Paysse played the next seven holes in 1 under, highlighted by his lone birdie on the par-4 seventh. But he struggled during the closing stretch, with three bogeys and a double bogey on Nos. 13-17 en route to a 79.
San Antonio's McClure Meissner fired an 8-under 64 at Bandon Dunes to seize the lead, one stroke ahead of Aman Gupta and Travis McInroe.
