Temple resident and incoming Belton High School senior Dallas Hankamer shot an 8-over-par 79 on Thursday in the first round of the 111st Texas Amateur at Boot Ranch in Fredericksburg. He is tied for 101st in the 129-player field.
Hankamer, a Texas A&M commitment, carded three birdies but also had two double bogeys and seven bogeys, including five consecutive bogeys on the back nine. He will tee off in the second round at 10 a.m. Friday, likely needing a low score to make the 36-hole cut.
Addison's Christopher Wheeler, last year's Texas Amateur runner-up at Dallas Athletic Club, fired a bogey-free 64 to build a one-stroke lead over Arlington's Caleb Hicks.
